December is peak season and for good reason: dry, sunny days, festive cheer and some of the finest beach weather of the year. It's warm in the south, crisp in the north, and celebratory all over. Here's where to travel in India in December, and how to plan for the season.
December brings clear, dry weather across the country. The north is cool and crisp by day and genuinely cold at night, with foggy mornings possible in Delhi and the plains.
The south, meanwhile, is warm and sunny, making Goa and Kerala ideal for the beach. It's a comfortable, reliable month, though the far north's chill catches some visitors by surprise.

December is beach season at its best. Goa buzzes with visitors, beach shacks and a lively social scene in the run-up to the New Year.
Further south, Kerala's backwaters are a serene contrast, perfect for a houseboat cruise under blue skies, while Tamil Nadu's temples and the beaches of Varkala complete a wonderful southern circuit.

The desert state of Rajasthan is at its most comfortable by day in December, though nights turn cold, so pack warm layers.
The Golden Triangle remains a classic, with clear skies over the Taj Mahal and the forts and bazaars of Jaipur. Just keep an eye on northern fog, which can occasionally disrupt early flights and trains.

December ends on a high. Christmas is celebrated warmly, especially in Goa, Kerala and other Christian communities, with midnight mass and festive markets.
New Year's Eve is a major event, with Goa's beaches and clubs at the centre of the party. Wildlife parks are also open and rewarding, making December a wonderfully varied month.
