January is arguably the finest month to travel across much of India. The winter air is crisp and dry, the light is beautifully clear, and the beaches of the south bask in dependable sunshine. It's peak season for good reason, so here are the standout places to point your compass towards, and how to make the most of them.
January sits at the heart of the Indian winter. Expect cool, dry days across the north, with chilly mornings and the occasional foggy dawn in Delhi and the plains, warming to pleasant afternoons.
Rajasthan is comfortable by day but genuinely cold at night in the desert. Head south and it's a different world: Goa, Kerala and Tamil Nadu enjoy warm, sunny days perfect for the beach.

With clear skies and manageable temperatures, January is ideal for the classic circuit of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, and for a deeper loop through Rajasthan.

If you'd rather trade forts for palm trees, the south delivers. Kerala's backwaters are glorious this month, gliding past on a houseboat under blue skies, while the beaches of Goa are at their liveliest.
This is also a lovely time for Tamil Nadu's temple towns and the tea hills of Munnar, where the days are warm and the evenings fresh.

January is rich with celebration. Makar Sankranti and Pongal (around 14 January) mark the harvest with kite-flying and feasting, spectacular in Gujarat and the south.

Winter fog can occasionally delay early-morning flights and trains in the north, so build a little slack into tight connections and avoid the very first departure of the day where you can. And do pack a warm layer: first-time visitors are often caught out by how cold northern nights become in January.
