March is a month of transition and celebration. The winter cool lingers early on before the heat starts to build, and the whole country erupts in colour for Holi, India's most joyful festival. It's a brilliant time to travel if you plan around the rising temperatures. Here's where to go in March.
Early March still feels like a pleasant late winter, but by the end of the month the plains begin to warm noticeably, with afternoons growing hot in Rajasthan and the central lowlands.
The south is warm and humid, while the Himalayan foothills stay fresh. It's a fine shoulder month: comfortable if you start your days early and seek shade at midday.

March is defined by Holi, when streets, temples and total strangers disappear under clouds of coloured powder. It's exuberant, messy and unforgettable.

March is a good window for sightseeing before summer arrives. The Golden Triangle and Rajasthan are still enjoyable early in the month, and the spiritual city of Varanasi is atmospheric on cooler mornings.
Wildlife parks remain excellent as the drying landscape concentrates animals around water, making March a strong month for tiger safaris.

As the plains heat up, the hills beckon. The tea gardens of Darjeeling and Munnar, and foothill towns across the north, offer cool, green respite.
It's also a lovely time for the backwaters and beaches of the south before the pre-monsoon humidity peaks, and for spotting wildlife in the Western Ghats.
