May is the height of the Indian summer on the plains, so this is the month to head up, not out. As the mountain roads reopen, the high Himalaya and hill stations become the place to be, while the lowlands wait for the monsoon. Here's where to travel in India in May.
May is the hottest month across much of India, with the plains baking under intense, dry heat before the monsoon breaks. Humidity rises along the coasts as the rains approach.
The answer is altitude. In the mountains, May brings warm, sunny days and the reopening of high roads and passes, making it the gateway month for Himalayan travel.

By late May, the roads into Ladakh typically reopen, and the high-altitude desert around Leh becomes accessible for the summer season.
This otherworldly landscape of ochre mountains, Buddhist monasteries and turquoise rivers is one of India's great adventures. Give yourself time to acclimatise to the altitude before attempting any strenuous activity.

Kashmir is glorious in May, its valleys green and mild. Drift across Dal Lake on a shikara, stay aboard a traditional houseboat, and take in the Mughal gardens of Srinagar in full bloom.
The meadows of Gulmarg and Pahalgam are perfect for gentle walking, offering cool air and Himalayan scenery far from the summer heat below.

If the high Himalaya feel too ambitious, the classic hill stations are at their busy best in May, as Indian families flock to escape the heat.
Book ahead, as these are popular with domestic holidaymakers this month.

If you're heading to Ladakh or other high-altitude regions, allow at least a couple of days to acclimatise on arrival and ascend gradually. Everywhere else, plan around the heat: early starts, midday rest and plenty of water are essential in May.
