Your journey begins the moment you step out of Colombo Airport. A transfer is waiting, your name on a sign, and within minutes you are on the road to your hotel.

If you arrive early, the resort's facilities are yours to enjoy – a swim, a stroll, or simply the view over the lagoon from the pool. There are no planned activities today, so you can arrive at any time. Just note that hotel check-in is from 1 pm.

In the evening, you meet your guide and the rest of the group for the first time over a shared dinner. Your guide will walk you through all the important information for the tour ahead. Tonight is for easing into the rhythm of the island and getting a good night's rest. Tomorrow, your Sri Lankan adventura begins.

• We recommend a flight arrive between 10am-5pm. The most ideal time to arrive is around 11am to allow you to settle in and rest before the tour begins.
• The only activity planned today is the welcome dinner around 6:30pm.

Your day begins on the water with a river safari, morning light filtering through the mangroves as your boat glides silently along. You set out from a local NGO dedicated to restoring the coastline. After spotting migratory birds, you go ashore at an authentic cinnamon plantation – the spice that put Sri Lanka on the map – and watch the bark being peeled and dried by hand. Then you explore a village where every part of the coconut is transformed into string, charcoal, food, drink, coir, bowls, and more. Before you continue, you each plant your own mangrove tree, leaving something that will grow.

Next, you visit a woodcarving family in their own home. This community has carved wood for thousands of years. Before the pandemic, hundreds of families practised the craft. Now only a handful remain. You watch delicate forms emerge from raw timber, learning what is at stake.

Afterwards, you arrive at Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your guide leads you on a walking tour along the ancient walls, through narrow lanes past Dutch colonial mansions, spice warehouses and colourful houses, with the Indian Ocean glittering beyond every rampart. The afternoon is yours to shape. Browse galleries and boutiques, enjoy a meal at a local café, or simply unwind at your heritage hotel, where the fort's centuries-old charm settles into every corner.

You leave the coast behind and head inland. En route to Udawalawe, you stop at a batik workshop, where local artists guide you through the traditional craft of wax melting and dyeing. By the end, you have your own piece to take home.

In the afternoon, you arrive at Udawalawe National Park. Unlike the crowded jeep queues of Yala, Udawalawe offers a quieter, more sustainable visit where wildlife moves to its own rhythm. It is famous for its vast families of Asian elephants, and it is almost impossible to leave without seeing them – but you may also spot water buffalo, crocodiles, eagles, and with real luck, a leopard slipping through the scrub. The golden afternoon light turns the landscape into something cinematic.

As darkness falls, you gather around a campfire. A live chef demonstrates the art of hoppers – batter sizzling on a hot griddle, the scent of coconut milk and fermented rice flour filling the night air. Crisp edges, soft centres, topped with spicy onion chilli or sweet caramelised onion. Traditional drumming and dance carry the evening forward, firelight flickering on faces. Dinner is served under a sky dense with stars. Simple. Unforgettable.

An early start, but well worth it. A villager from the area guides you on foot through the rice fields while the morning is still cool. Sunlight glints off the flooded paddies, and the only sounds are the gentle trickle of canals and birdsong from the trees.

You emerge into a village that feels untouched by time. Here, you witness the unhurried preparation of buffalo milk curd. Fresh milk simmers over a crackling wood fire, stirred patiently by hand, then poured into simple clay pots to set. There is no rush, no performance — just a glimpse of how things have been done here for generations. If you fancy a taste, a drizzle of sweet kithul syrup brings it to life.

From here, your private bus carries you into the hill country towards Ella. A pause at Ravana Falls lets you feel the cool spray and stretch your legs.

In Ella, a gentle walk brings you to the Nine Arch Bridge, one of Sri Lanka's most photographed spots — and yet, when the morning train rumbles across those elegant stone arches and you are standing there with a cold drink in hand, it still feels like a discovery.

Back in town, the rest of the day is your own. A café, a wander through the little shops, or simply watching the mountain light shift across the valley. Your guide is always nearby, but there is no timetable here.

A fresh morning breeze stirs the hills around Ella as you set out on foot. The climb to Little Adam's Peak is gentle — more a walk than a hike — winding through tea plantations where pluckers in bright saris pause to smile. From the summit, the view reaches across the Ella Gap, layer upon layer of green mountains folding into one another, mist drifting through the valleys. You stay as long as you like.

Then comes something that stays with people long after the trip ends. In a village nearby, you knock on the door of Tut and Ganani. This is not a staged cooking demonstration. It is their home. You walk with them into the garden first, picking fresh vegetables straight from the earth — aubergines, beans, bright chillies, whatever is ripe — and carry them inside.

The kitchen comes alive around you. Tut grinds spices on a stone, the aroma rising as cumin and chillies release their warmth. Ganani stirs the pot, adding coconut milk in slow, practised pours. You are part of the rhythm. The meal you eat together is yours in a way no restaurant dish can ever be.

Later, you head up to a Buddhist monastery perched on a mountain top. The views alone are worth the detour — mist-shrouded peaks and deep valleys stretching into the distance. Breathtaking. Here, a monk shares the principles of Buddhism, what it means to live this life, and if you wish, you join a short group meditation. No experience expected, no pressure. Just a rare moment of stillness in a truly extraordinary setting.

The morning begins with one of the world's great rail journeys. You board the train at Ella, find your seat by an open window, and settle in. As the locomotive pulls away, the highlands unfurl around you — tea slopes cascading into misty valleys, stone bridges spanning deep gorges, eucalyptus forests giving way to endless green. The breeze carries the cool mountain air through the carriage. The rhythm of the tracks sets its own unhurried pace. This is not just a transfer. This is the journey itself.

You arrive at Nanu Oya and travel through the vast tea fields to your hotel — and what a hotel it is. A fully restored tea factory, still in operation, now transformed into a luxury retreat high in the highlands. The moment you arrive, you feel it: the deep, earthy scent of withering leaves, the hum of machinery, the sight of tea pluckers in bright saris moving across the slopes just beyond your window. The views stretch in every direction, green upon green. It is a one-of-a-kind place, and it is yours for the night.

After lunch, you have a choice. For those who fancy stretching their legs, a five-mile hike through the tea plantations to a waterfall beckons. The trail weaves between terraced slopes, past pluckers who pause to smile, through corridors of green that open suddenly onto the cascade.

Prefer to stay behind? The pool shimmers with mountain views. The spa promises treatments that soothe muscles you have not even used yet. A book, a sun lounger, a cup of freshly brewed Ceylon tea — the highlands do their work either way.

The morning begins at the tea factory you called home for the night. After breakfast, you step into the fields and pluck your own leaves, then follow them through every stage — withering, rolling, fermenting, drying — in rooms where Ceylon tea has been produced for generations. The tasting afterwards makes sense of it all: fresh, fragrant, a world away from anything in a supermarket packet.

Afterwards, you travel to Kandy and stop first at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, the largest of their kind in Asia. Towering royal palms line the avenues. Orchids bloom in every shade. Lunch is taken right here among the trees, entirely unhurried.

From the gardens, you continue into the heart of Kandy. Your timing is deliberate: you arrive at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as the evening procession begins. This is the most revered Buddhist shrine on the island, said to house a tooth of the Buddha himself. You approach with flowers in hand, just as pilgrims have done for centuries, while drums echo through the halls and oil lamps cast their glow. It is a moment of genuine reverence — unhurried, deeply felt.

A stroll along Kandy Lake follows, then a browse through the city's bustling market. Later, you take your seat for a traditional cultural dance — drummers, acrobats, fire-walkers moving to rhythms older than the hills around you. The day closes with the temple still glowing in the evening light across the water.

The road from Kandy to Sigiriya carries you through Sri Lanka's green heartland — open plains, distant hills, the occasional flash of a kingfisher along the roadside. It is a gentle drive that gives you time to take it all in.

Your first stop is the Dambulla Cave Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site carved into a towering granite outcrop. A short, stepped climb brings you to the entrance, and once inside, the heat of the day falls away. The caves are wonderfully cool. Over 150 Buddha statues sit in meditation and repose — some carved from the living rock, others painted in deep gold and crimson. Frescoes ripple across the ceilings, telling stories that have endured for two millennia. There is no rush here. You move at your own pace, letting your eyes adjust to the soft light.

Lunch comes with a view you will not forget: Sigiriya, the great Lion Rock, rising from the plains before you like something from legend. The table is set with local dishes, and the rock stands silently in the distance, waiting.

Then, the afternoon. Sigiriya Rock Fortress is another UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the climb is not short — just under two hundred metres of steps, some steep, all rewarding. You ascend past the famous frescoes of the cloud maidens, between enormous lion's paws carved into the stone face, until the plateau opens beneath you. The panorama stretches for miles. Green forest. Distant mountains. A vast sky. It is worth every step.

If the full climb is not for you, there are lovely spots along the way to pause and wait — and the views from the lower terraces are still magnificent. No compromise. Just a different way to take it in.

The morning takes you to Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka's second royal capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For five centuries, the jungle held these ruins in its grip. Now they stand revealed: elegant stone pillars from the royal palace, colossal Buddha statues carved with serene precision, and the intricate lotus ponds that once graced the gardens of kings. You stroll through it all at a comfortable pace, with time to absorb the scale of what was built here nearly a thousand years ago.

Back near your hotel, the afternoon shifts from ancient history to something far more immediate. The land here is sandwiched between three national parks — wild elephants are not a distant rumour, they are neighbours. You walk through the surrounding farmland and meet local families who live with that reality every day. This is where a Karmaventura-supported social project comes to life. You help plant a lime tree and learn why citrus plays a quiet but vital role: elephants dislike the scent, and planting these trees helps protect crops without harming the animals. It is a simple, thoughtful solution — and your hands are part of it.

As the day begins to soften, you climb to a nearby viewpoint. The sun sinks over lakes and forests, painting the landscape in gold and rose. A moment of pure stillness.

But the day is not over yet. After dark, something special begins. You set out on a night safari — a rare opportunity to search for the creatures that only emerge after sunset. Torchlight sweeps across the undergrowth, catching the gleam of a loris's enormous eyes, the scuttle of a pangolin, perhaps the silent shadow of a fishing cat. This is Sri Lanka as few ever see it.

Your journey today takes you deep into Sri Lanka's past. You stop first at a women's weaving project supported by Karmaventura — a working space where local women sit at their looms, turning thread into fabric with skills that have shaped their independence. They share their stories. It is an authentic, grounding encounter.

From here, you continue to the Ritigala Forest, one of Sri Lanka's best-kept secrets. Stone pathways disappear under twisted roots. Crumbling meditation platforms sit in dappled shade. The only sounds are birdsong and rustling leaves as you follow the trail uphill to the ruins of an ancient Buddhist monastery — moss-covered, utterly silent, almost mystical.

In the afternoon, you arrive at Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka's first royal capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You stand beneath the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi Tree, a living offshoot of the very fig tree under which Buddha found enlightenment. The vast white Ruwanwelisaya Dagoba rises before you as pilgrims in pale robes move quietly, the scent of frangipani and incense drifting through ancient stone.

Before the day closes, you offer a monk's robe at the temple — a simple, respectful gesture that connects you to a tradition over two thousand years old.

You end the day at The Sanctuary at Tissawewa, a tranquil colonial-era hotel, where Queen Elizabeth II has stayed twice.

The road to Trincomalee carries you eastwards, the air growing warmer with every mile. Soon the first sea breeze slips through the windows, and you know the coast is near.

By early afternoon, you arrive at your beach hotel and check in. The sound of waves is the first thing you notice. The sand is pale and soft. The Indian Ocean stretches out in shades of turquoise and deep blue. The rest of the day is yours alone.

Perhaps you stroll along the shore, the warm water lapping at your feet. Perhaps you find a spot in the shade of a palm tree and simply sit. The pool glitters invitingly nearby. There is no schedule.

As the sun sinks, the sky turns gold and rose, the sea catching the last of the light. The evening is yours to spend as you please — dinner with the group, a quiet drink by the water, or a wander into the nearby town. Tomorrow, the beach will still be here.

The morning is yours to wake without an alarm. Breakfast stretches at your own pace, the sound of the Indian Ocean just beyond the terrace. The rest of the day follows suit. Swim. Read. Walk the shoreline with the warm water washing over your feet. The pool is there if you want it. So is the shade of a palm. If you fancy a little adventure, snorkelling trips can be arranged locally — but there is no pressure to do anything at all.

As evening falls, the day takes a more polished turn. Tonight is the traditional Sri Lankan feast — a proper spread of fragrant curries, fresh seafood, and richly spiced dishes that showcase the island's extraordinary cuisine. It is the sort of evening where you might dress up a little, if the mood takes you. After dinner, the sea air and the stars do the rest.

The morning is yours — one last leisurely breakfast, a final dip in the sea, a few quiet hours by the pool or on the sand. The tropical breeze is warm, the sound of the waves unhurried. It is the sort of morning that lets you savour everything the trip has given you.

Around midday, you begin the longest drive of the journey, heading back towards Negombo, where it all began. As the east coast slips away behind you, the landscape shifts — from palm-fringed shores to the lush green interior, then slowly towards familiar ground. It is a chance to watch Sri Lanka roll past one last time, a quiet procession of everything you have seen and felt these past weeks.

You arrive at your hotel near the airport in time to freshen up, ready for a late-night flight or a final rest before a morning departure. The coastline fades. The memories do not.

Your final morning begins with a leisurely breakfast as the city slowly stirs. If your flight is mid-morning, there is time for one last wander — perhaps a quiet stroll near the hotel grounds, the warm air a final reminder of the tropics before you head home.

When the time comes, a private transfer takes you to the airport, timed to your flight. As the plane lifts off and Sri Lanka recedes beneath you, the journey replays itself in quiet moments: the scent of cinnamon, the echo of temple bells, the laughter in Tut and Ganani's kitchen, the firelight under a star-filled sky.

You land back in London carrying more than luggage. You carry the taste of proper Ceylon tea, the stillness of a monastery on a mountain top, and the quiet knowledge that this island has left something with you that will stay.
